Due to concerns by the San Diego Supercomputer Center Security Group, there has been a reconfiguration of the anonymous FTP services at JCSG. These concerns arise from unauthorized use of anonymous FTP sites where anonymous users deposit computer viruses, worms, etc. or copyrighted materials such as music or movie files for widespread, illegal dissemination. This reconfiguration will require some changes to the way users access and use this site. The following policy is now enforced at JCSG.
Depositing Files
Users can anonymously log onto the site to deposit files into the /incoming directory or any of its subdirectories. These directories are write-only directories so users cannot read the contents of these directories. If these files are being deposited so that they can be accessed anonymously you need to send email to wangx@sdsc.edu itemizing the file name and path. The file will then be moved to the same place in the outgoing directory
Downloading Files
Files can only be downloaded from the /outgoing directory or any of its subdirectories. The directories are read-only directories so no files can be directly deposited to /outgoing.
Encrypted FTP
The JCSG FTP services is now running an SSL encryption service when the need to transfer data securely arises. Users will need to have a secure FTP client application on their local machines to take advantage of this service and will need to configure the client to use the SSL protocol made available via port 990.
We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause our user community but this is necessary to allow the ease of use of anonymous FTP service at JCSG.
